Height-Adjustable Table Base Buying Guide: Height Range, Load Rating and Cycle Life
Height-Adjustable Table Base Buying Guide
Three numbers decide whether a base suits your project: height range, load rating and cycle life. Get those right and the base will do its job for years. Get them wrong and no amount of finish quality will save the specification.

1. Height range
The range must cover the shortest and tallest user, plus the top thickness. Common commercial ranges are 48-71 cm for dining and desk heights and 74-108 cm for bar and standing heights. If a single base must serve both, ask for the widest travel available.
2. Load rating
Add up everything that will sit on the top: the top itself, monitors, a monitor arm, PC tower, files and a leaning user. Specify against the total, not the visible load. Column diameter and column count should then be selected to match.
3. Cycle life
Cycle life is the number of full raise-and-lower strokes a base completes in testing. It is the single best proxy for durability. A base proven to 120,000 strokes has effectively been used far beyond a normal service life before it ever shipped.

| Specify | Ask for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Height range | Shortest and tallest user, plus top thickness | Comfort and safety for every user |
| Load rating | Total loaded weight including fittings | Stability and mechanism life |
| Cycle life | Test figure and warranty term | Maintenance and replacement planning |
| Column | Single or double, with clearance details | Rigidity and wobble-free use |
| Power | Electric or non-electric | Cable management and failure risk |
| Finish | Powder-coated colour and QC reports | Appearance and corrosion resistance |

Do not overlook the movement quality
Two bases with identical ranges can feel completely different. A lift with a patented buffer eases in and out of the top and bottom of the stroke; a plain lift arrives with a thud. On a desk used by older people or in a quiet room, that difference is noticed every day.
- Should the base be electric or non-electric?
- If the furniture is shared, moved often, or used where cables are a concern, non-electric is the lower-risk choice. Electric suits individual desks with frequent daily changes.
- What warranty is reasonable?
- Two years on the lift system is typical for a quality commercial base, with spare cylinders available for long-term maintenance.
- What paperwork should come with the order?
- ISO 9001 production records, third-party inspection reports on request, and the cycle-test figure for the lift you selected.
